Local attractions

Haute Epine is situated on the outskirts of the village St Martial Viveyrols, a 10 minute drive from the market town of Ribérac in the Périgord Vert region of the Dordogne. The Dordogne is one of the most beautiful and popular destination for tourists in France, and is home to charming villages, delightful scenery, spectacular sites, monuments, caves and castles.

You can choose to relax and enjoy the good food and wine, or get involved in more active pursuits such as canoeing, walking and cycling. Although it is one of the larger regions of France, most places of interest here can be reached within 2 hours by car.

Haute Epine

Haute Epine itself is half the land and buildings of what used to be a farming community/hamlet centuries ago. The remaining half of the land continues to operate as a working live-stock farm.

Wildlife

Those of you who enjoy wildlife will not be disappointed, especially during the summer when they are more active. In the day huge buzzards and other birds of prey can be seen circling high in the sky, sat on telegraph poles, or even on the garden fence. This is hunting country too so you may be lucky enough to see the wild deer and boar

Coypu (Europe's largest rodent) are seen infrequently near our property, but if you do want a close encounter with one, take a trip to the lakes at Torbiére one day where they are regularly fed by the patrons of the bar there. At dusk we have a small family of bats which use our courtyard as their highway, and you can hear the beautiful relaxing song of tiny midwife toads too.

Weather

This region does have seasons, but the area can still be enjoyed all year round with suitably appointed accommodation such as at Haute Epine.

Summers are usually very warm (25-35 degrees), with occasional storms in the evening.
Spring and autumn are similar, but a little cooler (22-28 degrees) with a greater chance of rain.
Winter is usually mild and can be wet, but often has short bursts of cold weather (down as low as -10 degrees) when the fields and trees glisten white with frost and the sky is bright and sunny.
